The Suite has its origins in the blog/website NoToHydrofracking, which I began creating on the morning of October 14, 2010 after seeing a beautiful rainbow over the meadow and woods behind our house in Canandaigua, NY (see the first image above).
I had become very concerned about what hydrofracking could do to the area of NY State that my wife and I, and other family members, lived in. Would hydrofracking force us to leave the State? Would hydrofracking in our area devalue our house so much that we could not sell it? Would hydrofracking devastate the environment and our area's valuable fresh water resources? And what about its impacts on the health of the people, wildlife and farm animals? Would hydrofracking destroy the wine and organic farming and the tourism industries just beginning to come unto their own in our State, and in our area? How would it affect the economies and general well being of impacted communities?
As I learned more about the horrors of hydrofrcking, the greed and denials, intended lies and misleading use of media, the corruption and power controls by the oil and gas industry, its apparent collusion with the NY State DEC . . . I became motivated to join my wife, Gloria, who was already actively engaging this issue, to at least try to help inform others about this potentially crisis situation that was rapidly unfolding in NY State. Please visit NoToHydrofracking for breaking news stories, essays, videos, helping organization links, etc.
Now, over a year and a half later, an incredible outcry by grass roots organizations, environmentalists, concerned scientists, doctors, economists, and oil industry outsiders who have left the industry to speak against the greedy ugly powerful business, have joined forces and created a growing grassroots coalition to speak out against the lies and the lobbying of politicians and the manipulations being used to support the oil and gas industry against unknowing citizens.
On December 17, 2014, under tremendous pressure from environmentalists, scientists, doctors, economists, etc., Gov. Cuomo announced that he would Ban hydrofracking in NY State. On June 29, 2015, the Ban was made official with a Findings Statement http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/102337.html that declared hydrofracking dangerous to environment, human and animal health.
In the meantime he and his DEC has allowed toxic fracking waste to be brought into NY State dumps, he has allowed gas and oil infrastructure to expand within the state with an eye to exporting gas and oil overseas, and he has allowed the gas and oil industry to store toxic gas and oil products on the shores of Seneca Lake, a source of drinking water for over 100,000 people. It is so obviously outrageous, given the findings statement that came out June 29, 2015 which finalized the ban on fracking in NY State. Though the State finally admits they know how bad fracking is for the environment and the health of people, animals, the real threat of fracking is alive and kicking in the State.
I hope you will look at the four photography projects that make up the Hydrofracking Suite, learn more about hydrofracking, and support the battle against hydrofracking in any way you can. The life of NY State depends on concerned citizens to stop the industry and the politicians who only think greedily about themselves and short term profits. If we don't act now, by remaining silent we are giving the industry and the politicians and the media the "go ahead" signal to destroy our local communities, our health and the health of the environment . . . and the entire planet, because hydrofracking gases destroy the earth's protective ozone layer and thus speeds up Global Warming/Climate Change.
There are alternatives to the destructive and polluting fossil fuels we use. There are more sustainable and renewable forms of energy that can be developed and that will create new jobs and help save our local communities and the planet. We must make the shift, and we must begin doing it now.
