Introduction
There are currently three parts to the Chapter 10 project entitled Walkabout. Each part has its own dedicated webpage. Be sure to see Part I which introduces the project as a whole and includes a collection of photographs on multiple themes. Part III is a collection of photographs made in an old house that is being remodeled.
The collection of photographs made on my journey to Memphis in early March, 2014 is not a travelogue. It is not a document or a narrative. It is a continuation of my journey into the visionary world of Morandi, and an exploration of his stated intention: to touch the essence, the core of things through his creative process.
When an image unveils the essence of a place or thing to a viewer, a certain feeling of numinous meaning is sensed, some internal energy is liberated, time seems to stop, the heart opens, a silent conversation begins. This kind of experience of an image suggests that it has presence. We experience something deep within ourselves which corresponds to some essential quality within the image.
Morandi's work is for me palpable with presence. The formal reduction typical of his imagery, the relationships between things and the overall visual structure of his images, the mystery of light and color and tone in his images, all this and more have an ineffable power to invoke deep resonances, something like memories that were presumed lost. This is what I am trying to get at in my own Morandi inspired works.

My Introduction to Part I of my three part project explains how I came to the title Walkabout during my visit to see a friend who lives in Memphis.
