The Meadow
2008 - ongoing
My wife Gloria and I live on the edge of a beautiful meadow not far from Canandaigua Lake, one of the Finger Lakes of NY State. I love watching the daily and seasonal changes of light, color and atmosphere that transform the meadow, the tapering woods bordering it, and the two ponds that not only reflect the light of the heavens, but also appear to me as if eyes which are constantly watching me. I have been thinking a lot about Climate Change since we moved to New State from Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2008.
This project is an ongoing poetic document of what I see and feel about the natural world, and the small part of the planet that lies just beyond our back yard. Many of the photographs you'll see here were made from the back deck of our house which looks both NorthWest and SouthWest over the meadow. Several of the images were made inside the meadow. I have been adding photographs to this collection quite regularly since the blog project was initiated in November, 2010.

When I make the Meadow photographs I am able to look past my fears and anger and frustrations regarding the lack of political will throughout the world to love and care for our environment and the planet as a whole. Each photograph is an act of acknowledgement of the sacredness of the land and our planet which, the great yogic sages tell us, is alive with a consciousness that is identical to our own. May these photographs serve as something like a prayer in support of a future that will be filled with people and governments who will care for the planet and insure that our children and grandchildren have a safe and healthy place to live in this universe.

I want to pay homage, with this growing collection of photographs, to the great poet Francis Ponge, who takes "the side of things" in his poetry, especially the things of the natural world. His poetry in general, and his book The Making of the Pre' [Meadow] have been an important influence upon this project. For Ponge everything in the meadow and in this world is intelligent, filled with some inexplicable, silent awareness that is constantly watching us, and longing for us to hear its pleas.Welcome to The Meadow project.

Afterword
May these Meadow photographs, and my other Landscape photography projects serve as a prayer and a blessing upon our ailing, threatened planet Earth. May the beauty and well being of our Natural World prevail. It is up to us now! The effort must be individual, but equally important it must be a united, political Global effort, which reflects the truth of science and the will of the people.

My son Shaun (who gave me the idea of creating this blog) was practicing using his new drone-camera. If you are interested in view the meadow from the sky view the Youtube link below.
