The Complete 12x12" Inkjet Print Books & Thematic PROJECTS, 2023-24

The 2023-2024 & 2025
12x12" Inkjet Print Books &
Theme-based PROJECTS

In late December, 2024 I decided to restructure & revise my 2023-2024 Inkjet Print Project. It just kept growing in size and complexity, so I have tried to simplify how to best present this large body of inkjet printed work which, at its heart, is the very large project consisting of eleven 12x12" Inkjet Print Books consisting of arbitrarily selected favorite images from my blog and early gelatin print projects, images which had never before been given an inkjet print physical form. And then, from the Books, I have collected images that belong together in terms of various shared thematic ideas, etc. as described below in the titles of the over twenty-four 12x12" Thematic PROJECTS.

Very recently, since June 2024, I have begun to make large 18x18" and 21x21" Square Inkjet Prints, of some of the 12x12" images I have made for this project. I pretty much simply used the large files I had created for the 12x12" images, suspecting from the beginning that I might want to make larger images from the 12x12" files for various reasons.

I have created a separate list for the Books and a separate list for the PROJECTS. Since the PROJECTS are thematic collections, I thought it would be best to begin there, then follow with the Books.

It has been quite an education for me, making all the 12x12" prints for the Books and then selecting images from the Books according to recurring themes for the PROJECTS. Through
this process I have become more conscious of how so many of my favorite images address--simultaneously--multiple thematic issues.
The 12x12" inkjet print
PROJECTS
_________________Thematic collections of images___________________

All of the PROJECT images exist as 12x12" inkjet prints, drawn for the most part from the over 800 printed images collected within the 12x12" B00ks. Each PROJECT's introductory text discusses the thematic issues announced in the title.

The tonal mattes that surround the 12x12" images vary in size, but in every case I have carefully considered the tone-color and width of the surrounding matte very carefully and thus I do consider the matte an integral part of each image.

As I have already mentioned, I have recently made 18x18" and 21x21" versions of several of the 12x12" images, and I have made some 16x20" versions of some of the 12x12" images as well. See the complete collection of 2023-2024 inkjet printed projects and photographs in this one blog link: The Complete 2023~2024  Inkjet Print Project Published December 23, 2024; This link includes the 21x21, 18x18, 16x20 & 12x12" collections of inkjet prints and several other related projects.

Please Note: most (but not all) of the 12x12" images in the BOOK and PROJECT collections
can be printed larger than 12x12." Nearly all of the 12x12" symmetrical images can be
printed up to 21" high x 21" wide . . . and in some instances much wider.
A final Note:  I am concerned that you see my blog images in the highest quality reproductions possible.  The blog images can never be as thrilling as the actual prints, but I encourage you to look over the following statement below which I have included in nearly all of my blog projects of the last two years:

A brief note about "How to Best View My Online Blog Images"
If you are viewing this project on a desktop computer or a laptop, I encourage you to read my blog explanation regarding How to Best View My Online Blog Images.  In brief, click on an image once, then once again; this will (hopefully) enlarge the image and present it in a dark tonal environment at its maximum viewing quality in terms of image sharpness, luminance, tonal gradations, etc.  Once you have entered this alternate viewing space you can then use your zoom-in & zoom-out keyboard or menu options to adjust the image size to your screen, and you can darken or lighten your computer's screen brightness to suit your equipment and viewing preferences.

BOOKS
_____________Non-thematic collections of images_______________

The eleven 12x12" Inkjet Print BOOKS listed below are digital (blog) collections of the 12x12" inkjet print images that were originally published in my thematic blog projects. I have chosen images that work well in the 12x12" format. (Some images work better in their original longer 4:3 format and thus were not included in the 12x12" Books, and some images needed to be printed larger to best articulate visually the picture's presence and meaning.

* * *

I stopped making silver gelatin negatives and prints after 2003 when I bought my first Epson printer and a scanner to make digital files from my negatives. I have scanned both prints and negatives from earlier projects for the purposes of publishing the photographs in my blog projects which I began making in late 2010, and for the purposes of making the inkjet prints you will be seeing blog versions of in this project.

Though the BOOKS do not deal with particular themes, within each collection there may be clusters of images that relate to each other in various ways in terms of subject matter, formal issues, conceptual themes, etc. Also, many of the 12x12" inkjet print images may differ in format, from the earlier versions published in my blog projects.

The idea to make 12x12" (square) inject prints from favorite images I had published in my blog projects (beginning in November 2010) was in part inspired by the early Studies I photography project of 1994-2000, in which I made miniature, snapshot size silver gelatin prints of images I found hidden in my archive of early mostly 35mm black and white negatives. I have written in detail about this in my Introduction for Book One.

I have mentioned that the "12x12 inkjet print" images are surrounded by a tonal matte which I consider to be an integral part of the 12x12" image; I have written about the mattes in several BOOK introductions, including the Introduction to my first Book of 12x12" inkjet photographs, and the Introduction to my early inkjet print project: The Pandemic Inkjet Prints.

At the time of publishing the ELEVENTH BOOK there were over 800 inkjet prints (12x12") in total.  Many of the 12x12" inkjet prints work perfectly for the images I had chosen, and some needed to be printed larger.  To see my collection of the larger newly printed inkjet prints, please click on this link The Complete 2023~2024  Inkjet Print Project

Please Note: most (but not all) of the 12x12" images in the BOOK and PROJECT collections
can be printed larger than 12x12" ranging from 15x15" to, in some cases, 18x18" and larger.
Nearly all of the 12x12" symmetrical images can be printed to 21x21" and many of the
longer formatted symmetrical images can be printed 21" high & up to 26" wide.

                                            "Squaring the Circle"
Introduction
Given my background of studying Carl Jung's theory of the Creative Unconscious, his concept of the (unified) Self, his in-depth research into archetypes, symbols, medieval alchemy and synchronicity; and because I wrote an MFA thesis paper on Jung's theories in relationship to my Creative Process in photography and because I created a blog photography project entitled As Above, So Belowand given the fact that I (along with my wife Gloria) have been practicing Siddha Yoga Meditation with a Siddha Guru, Gurumayi Chidvilasananda since 1987; and given the fact that I have strived to give visual-photographic form to the transcendent idea of The Oneness of Being in relation to my concept of the Symbolic Photograph, and in particular with images I call four-fold Symmetrical Photographs . . .  it should be no surprise that I would be interested in the alchemical idea of "Squaring the Circle" which, essentially, is the idea of conjoining opposites--Heaven (the circle) & Earth (the square) into a "singular whole," a "higher synthesis," a True, living Symbol which unites images of the material world with their corresponding interior-spiritual image counterparts.

*

I love the square format.  It insists on concentrated, intensely direct seeing and, in many ways, a simple and yet elegant straightforward formal-pictorial language.  I love the circle for its roundness of being; its archetypal cosmic relationship to the sun, the moon, our planet, and all other things which are essentially round in their Truest nature.

I have always thought of my symmetrical images (nearly every one of them) as "circular" or "round" images.  And I have come to insist, after an exploratory period of experimenting with my new inkjet printer (obtained in January, 2023) and making over 800 12x12" inkjet prints with it, that my symmetrical photographs should be set in the square format, and that they should be much larger than the 12x12" inkjet prints in order to get the full visual essence of this kind of imagery.  Thus I have at last initiated this project dedicated especially to my symmetrical photographs and the relatively larger print size of the 21x21" format.

(I have made 12x12" prints, 16x20" prints, 18x18" prints, and for this project, I have made the 21x21" prints.)

The simple fact is that in general my symmetrical images work better in the larger print sizes, even though I prefer in many ways the intimacy of the other sized inkjet print images.  I encourage you to visit my 12x12" inkjet print project Infinity for what I consider to be some important contextual information regarding my symmetrical images.

*     *     *

All of images published in this blog project existed first as 12x12" inkjet prints.  The image size, 21x21" dimensions, includes the surrounding tonal mattes; the image is printed on a 24x24" white paper base which provides a 1.5" surrounding white border on all four sides.

I have divided this collection of 21x21" inkjet prints into two parts:  Part One consists of only Symmetrical images of subject matter based in nature only; Part Two consists all other images I have printed 21x21" including some other kinds of symmetrical images of varying subject matter.

Under each image I have provided a project title and a project image #, and below that I have provided titles (mostly descriptive) and in some cases below the title I have included links to related projects and perhaps some written commentary.  If you happen to notice some image #'s being out of sequential order from top to bottom, that has occurred due to post-publishing changes and additions.   Please pay no attention to the numbering of the images, though each image does have its own unchanging number which provides a quick and easy way of locating an image in the sequence using the computer (command f) once you have identified the image and its number or title.

*

Before you begin looking at the images, I do want to bring your attention the issue of how best to view my blog published images, especially for those of you who are viewing this project with a desktop or laptop computer.

If you are viewing this blog project on a desktop or laptop computer, I encourage you to try to access what I assure you is a preferable, alternate blog viewing mode that presents the image enlarged, in a dark tonal environment, and with a much sharper, luminous and tonally more accurate rendering of the image compared to that which first appears in the blog's default, published viewing mode.  ~  Please read the brief statement below and, if you would like more technical information, I invite you to click on the blue hyperlinked blog page title How to Best View My Online Blog Images.

A brief note about "How to Best View My Online Blog Images"
If you are viewing this project on a desktop computer or a laptop, I encourage you to read my blog explanation regarding How to Best View My Online Blog Images.  In brief, click on the images once, then once again; this will (hopefully) enlarge the image and present it in a dark tonal environment at its maximum viewing quality in terms of image sharpness, luminance, tonal gradations, etc.  Once you have entered this alternate viewing space you can then use your zoom-in & zoom-out keyboard (or menu) options to adjust the image size, and you can darken or lighten your computer's screen brightness to suit your equipment and viewing preferences.

English translation of the Hindu version:

Just as the image of a crystal is seen in a mirror, so the bliss,
which is consciousness, is reflected in the Self and
the realization comes, "Indeed, I am That."

(The golden sunset-lit clouds over the North Meadow, Woods & Pond)

This is a new version of an image which I have always experienced as being filled with
divine/Angelic presence. At the same time it invokes the remembrance--with great
respect and gratitude--of Alfred Stieglitz a very early mentor of mine when I was a
young college student studying photography.   His series of cloud photographs,
which he called Equivalents (and Songs of the Sky) filled me with wonder,
the feeling I experience with this image.  The dark matte tone has been
difficult for me to get just right; the idea I have is that it should
resonate with the darker clouds in the imaged which hint of
coming or passing storm.  ~   I have always believed that I am
a picture-maker, and thus free to do what I must to get an
image to resonate for me in way that is in synch with
what I feel is alive within  the depths of my heart or
soul.  This often gets me in touch with a calming
silence.  This Self-portrait is, I think, a good
image with which to conclude this project.
