Windswept Symmetrical Photographs
Introduction
These symmetrical photographs were constructed from images I had made for an earlier project entitled Windswept Landscapes and Memorials. I encourage you to visit the project, see the original single, wind-blurred images, and read the brief introduction. To see my other symmetrical photograph projects visit: The Complete Collection
I'm fascinated by the transformation that occurs with the making of symmetrical photographs. I have written elsewhere about how the process of constructing four-fold symmetrical photographs from a singular image resonates for me as a ritual act.
In the case of the Windswept Symmetrical Photographs I began the four-fold making process with images that had already undergone radical "wind-blurred" transformations. I had thought of those initial transformations as visual metaphors for the transforming power of nature - in particular, the way wind can purify, change or even heal certain things of the world in radical, magical or otherwise meaningful ways. Of course wind is associated with the divine breath and inspiration.
Because of the radical degree of transformation these images have undergone, I suspect in some cases that some viewers would be interested to know the original subject matter that was photographed in relation to how it looks in this new form. Thus I have supplied titles which could perhaps add another level of conceptual complexity and meaning to your experience of the images.
