Morton Feldman

        Morton Feldman

       American Composer  (1926 -1987)

(Note:  Since 1999 I have produced three large projects in response to the music of American composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987), who taught and composed in Buffalo, NY the last 17 years of his life.  Please visit The Departing Landscape Project  &  The Triadic Memories Project  (both are collections of separate but related thematic projects, each with their own dedicated webpage).  The Garage Series was my first Feldman inspired project.  The three images directly below are from each of these projects.  Steven Foster)

Morton Feldman was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1926; he studied music, worked in his family business and composed in New York City until 1973 when he moved to Buffalo, NY. where he taught and composed until his death in 1987.

He was close friends with John Cage and many of the New York abstract painters in the 1950’s and 60’s.  His music was significantly influenced by New York School painting and the abstract patterned rugs of the Middle East.  By the time he died, at the age of 61, his music was celebrated throughout the world, and he lectured and wrote extensively, especially about music and the visual arts.
